Information about Europa League:
The UEFA Europa League has its roots in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, a European football competition played between 1955 and 1971, which grew from just 11 teams in its first edition to 64 by its last.
The competition was inaugurated in the 1971–72 season under the name of the UEFA Cup, with the purpose of offering a platform for international competition to clubs that did not qualify for the European Cup or the European Cup Winners' Cup.
The very first UEFA Cup final was an all-English affair between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur, with Spurs claiming the inaugural title. Over the following decades, clubs such as Juventus, Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid, Parma, Galatasaray, and Valencia left their mark on the competition, forging rivalries and narratives that endure to this day.
In 1999, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was abolished and merged with the UEFA Cup, consolidating European club competition into two main tournaments. In 2009–10, the competition was rebranded as the UEFA Europa League, a move designed to reinforce the competition's identity, and was merged with the UEFA Intertoto Cup to create an expanded format.
Since the 2014–15 edition, the Europa League champion earns a place in the following season's UEFA Champions League, significantly raising the competition's prestige.
Sevilla is by far the most successful club in the competition's history, having won seven titles, including three consecutive victories from 2014 to 2016.
The current champions are Tottenham Hotspur, who claimed their third title in the most recent edition.
Today, the UEFA Europa League is the second most prestigious club competition in European football, attracting top-level teams and millions of fans across the globe each season.
