Information about Ligue 1:
Professionalism in French football did not exist until July 1930, when the National Council of the French Football Federation voted 128–20 in favour of its adoption.
Ligue 1 was inaugurated on 11 September 1932 under the name National, before switching to Division 1 after just one year of existence — a name it kept until 2002, when it adopted its current title.
Football came relatively late to France compared to other European nations, as cycling was long the country's dominant sport, though the game began spreading from Britain to Paris and northern France in the 1890s.
Marseille won the 1992–93 championship but were later stripped of their title due to a match-fixing scandal involving their match against Valenciennes, making that season unique in Ligue 1 history as no champion was declared.
AS Saint-Étienne remains the most successful club historically with ten league titles, while Olympique Lyon holds the record for consecutive championships, winning seven in a row between 2002 and 2008.
Paris Saint-Germain has since emerged as the dominant force, winning 8 of the last 10 Ligue 1 championships, with only Lille OSC in 2020–21 and AS Monaco in 2016–17 breaking their streak.
Argentine player Delio Onnis is the all-time leading scorer in Ligue 1 history, netting 299 goals in 449 games across four clubs between 1971 and 1986. In 2025, Paris Saint-Germain made history by winning the UEFA Champions League, becoming only the second French club to claim Europe's premier trophy after Marseille in 1993.
Ligue 1 is currently ranked fifth in Europe, behind La Liga, the Premier League, the Bundesliga, and Serie A. Despite this ranking, the league continues to produce world-class talent and remains one of the most compelling competitions on the European football calendar.
