Information about Champions League:
In the 1950s, French sports journalist Gabriel Hanot lobbied for a pan-European football tournament after an English newspaper hailed Wolverhampton Wanderers as "champions of the world" following a win over Hungarian club Honvéd, prompting UEFA to organise a proper European club competition.
The tournament was launched in 1955 as the European Champion Clubs' Cup, commonly known as the European Cup, and was initially a straight knockout competition open only to the domestic league champions of each country.
Real Madrid dominated the early years of the competition and remain to this day its most successful club, having lifted the trophy a record 15 times.
The competition took on its current name — the UEFA Champions League — in 1992, adding a round-robin group stage in 1991 and allowing multiple entrants from certain countries from the 1997–98 season onwards.
A rule dating back to 1968–69 awarded the cup permanently to any team that won the competition five times, a feat achieved by Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, AC Milan, and Barcelona.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Barcelona each lifted the iconic trophy twice, cementing the dominance of Italian and Spanish clubs in European football.
In 2025, Paris Saint-Germain made history by winning their first-ever Champions League title, becoming only the second French club to do so after Marseille in 1993.
The top five European leagues by coefficient each provide four teams by default, reflecting the competition's evolution from a purely national champions' tournament into a showcase for the continent's elite clubs. T
oday, the UEFA Champions League is the most prestigious club football competition in the world, captivating hundreds of millions of fans across every continent with its iconic anthem and unforgettable finals.
