Information about Conference League:

UEFA began considering a third European club competition around 2015, with the goal of giving clubs from countries with lower football rankings a better chance to compete in major tournaments beyond what the Champions League or Europa League could offer.

In December 2018, UEFA officially announced the new competition, initially referred to internally as "Europa League 2." The official name — UEFA Europa Conference League — was announced in September 2019.

The competition was created to accommodate at least 34 of UEFA's national associations in its group stage, making it the most inclusive of the three European club competitions.

The debut season in 2021–22 was marked by a historic moment: José Mourinho led AS Roma to the title with a 1–0 victory over Feyenoord in the final, securing the club their first-ever European silverware.

An interesting milestone from that first edition was that the inaugural final attracted more viewers than the Europa League final of the same season. In 2024, Olympiacos beat Fiorentina 1–0 in the final, becoming the first Greek club ever to win a major European football competition.

Chelsea are the current champions, claiming their first Conference League title in the most recent edition. Starting from the 2024–25 season, UEFA removed "Europa" from the name to help it stand out as its own unique competition, simplifying it to the UEFA Conference League, while also expanding the format from a 32-team group stage to a larger 36-team league phase.

The winner of the competition automatically qualifies for the following season's Europa League, unless they have already secured a Champions League place through their domestic league.

Though the youngest of UEFA's three major club competitions, the Conference League has quickly established itself as an exciting and widely watched tournament, giving clubs and fans from across the continent a stage they might never otherwise reach.
