Serie A, officially known as Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A, is Italy's top football league, with roots going back to 1898, though it took its current structured form in 1929.

The very first Italian championship, held in 1898, was decided in a single day with just four teams competing in a knockout tournament, with Genoa coming out as the inaugural winners. The modern Serie A officially kicked off on September 17, 1929, with 18 clubs competing, and Internazionale — then known as Ambrosiana-Inter — won the first title.

During this early period, the ruling Fascist party banned foreign players from the league, which led clubs to recruit players of Italian descent from South America, known as rimpatriati. One of the most dramatic chapters in Serie A history came with Torino, who won five consecutive titles in the 1940s, only for the Superga air disaster in 1949 to tragically end their dominance, killing the entire first-team squad.

AC Milan produced a remarkable feat in the 1991–92 season by going unbeaten throughout the entire campaign, a feat later matched by Juventus in 2011–12. Juventus went on to win nine consecutive league titles from 2011–12 to 2019–20, before their unprecedented streak finally came to an end.

The club with the most titles in Serie A history is Juventus, with 36 championships, followed by Inter Milan with 20 and AC Milan with 19. Since 1961, the league champion receives the Coppa Campioni d'Italia trophy, while the title itself is traditionally referred to as winning the Scudetto — Italian for "little shield."

Today, Serie A remains one of the world's most celebrated football competitions, renowned for its tactical sophistication and passionate fan culture.
