Information about Premier League:

English football was historically organised under the Football League, established in 1888, and for much of the 20th century, the First Division represented the pinnacle of English football.

By the late 1970s and 1980s, the game faced serious challenges: stadiums were outdated, attendances were declining, and football hooliganism damaged the sport's reputation. On 20 February 1992, the 22 First Division clubs resigned from the Football League en masse and, three months later, the Premier League was established as a limited company.

A major motivation behind the breakaway was television revenue — the new league negotiated its own broadcasting contract with Sky Television, introducing live televised matches on a scale never seen before and fundamentally changing how football was consumed by fans.

Manchester United won the inaugural title in the 1992–93 campaign, ending a 26-year wait to be crowned champions of England. In 1995, the league was reduced from 22 to 20 clubs, the format it still uses today.

The Premier League quickly improved the comfort and safety of stadiums, signed lucrative broadcast and sponsorship deals, and began attracting many of the world's top players and managers. Manchester United became the first club to win three consecutive titles, achieving this between 1999 and 2001, while more recently Manchester City became the first club to win four in a row, from 2021 to 2024.

Since its establishment, fifty-one clubs have played at Premier League level, with Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool among the most renowned. Today, the Premier League is widely considered the most-watched domestic football competition in the world, broadcasting to hundreds of countries and generating enormous commercial revenue.
