La Liga, officially known as the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, was founded in 1929 as Spain's first national football league, initially consisting of ten clubs. FC Barcelona won the inaugural championship, defeating Real Madrid by just two points in a thrilling first season. In 1936, the Spanish Civil War broke out and the league was suspended until 1939, with several stadiums damaged during the conflict.

After resuming, the competition gradually expanded and grew in prestige across Europe. Real Madrid's dominance became particularly notable during the 1960s, when they won twelve league titles out of sixteen possible between 1953 and 1969. Barcelona also achieved remarkable runs under Johan Cruyff and later Pep Guardiola, including three and four consecutive titles. Throughout its history, La Liga has been home to some of football's greatest talents — from Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Only nine different clubs have ever lifted the trophy, with Real Madrid leading the way with 36 titles, followed by Barcelona with 28 and Atlético Madrid with 11. Since 1997, twenty clubs have competed in the top division each season. Today, La Liga is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious and entertaining football leagues in the world, attracting millions of fans across every continent.
