German football leagues had existed long before the Bundesliga, with the first regional league — the Southern German football championship — formed as early as 1898. The formation of the Bundesliga in 1963 was driven not only by a desire to professionalise the sport, but also to prevent the best players from going abroad and to revive the national team following their 1962 FIFA World Cup quarter-final exit.

On August 24, 1963, the inaugural season kicked off with 16 clubs, and Timo Konietzka of Borussia Dortmund scored the very first goal in Bundesliga history, just one minute into the opening match. 1. FC Köln won that first title by a six-point margin, with Uwe Seeler finishing as top scorer with 30 goals for Hamburger SV. In 1965, the number of clubs was increased from 16 to 18, the format that remains in place today.

The Bundesliga is known for its distinctive 50+1 rule, introduced in 1998, which ensures that clubs — and their fans — hold a majority of their own voting rights, keeping ticket prices low and debts under control compared to other major European leagues. There have been 12 different German champions since the league's founding, with Bayern Munich collecting the most titles by far, ahead of Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

One of the most remarkable recent moments came in the 2023–24 season, when Bayer Leverkusen broke Bayern Munich's long streak of consecutive titles, claiming their first ever Bundesliga championship.

The Bundesliga has become a hallmark of German football's rich legacy, with passionate supporters, world-class talent, and enthralling matches. Today, it stands as one of the best-attended football leagues in the world, consistently drawing some of the largest average crowds of any domestic competition.
